“Engineering a model of the human mind”
Khac Nhat Nam Nguyen's research has an origin most teenagers never face: the death of someone he knew, to a stroke. It gave him both a destination — a computational model of the human brain and mind that could improve prediction and treatment for neurological patients — and a principle: keep humanity at the center of the work. From his base in Hanoi, Nam has published peer-reviewed research on seizure and stroke prediction, contributed to projects at Stanford and Dartmouth, and earned a solo silver medal in Stanford's RNA 3D Folding competition. When early rejections taught him how inaccessible research can be for newcomers, he responded by taking on students of his own, training the next cohort of young scientists. Reserved and mission-driven, Nam represents the quiet, rigorous end of this class — a researcher building for impact, not applause.
